Colonial rule is the control of West African lands by European states. Britain and France taxed people, drew boundaries, and ran courts and schools in their own interest.
The idea
Indirect rule, used by Britain and clearest in Northern Nigeria, governed through existing chiefs. The chief collected tax, kept order, and sat in a native court, while a British officer kept the final say. Direct rule, used more widely by France, put French officials in charge and expected people to follow French law and the French language. That policy is often called assimilation. Neither system asked the population for consent. The boundary between the two was not always clean. The Gold Coast used chiefs as well, and the colonial government still decided.
Taxes, forced labour and cash crops pulled work towards what the colony could sell abroad. Cocoa in the Gold Coast and groundnuts in Senegal are the examples. A chief under indirect rule could lose the respect of the town when he enforced an unpopular tax, or gain a power the older constitution had not given him. A compare question needs both systems, one real difference, and an example. "Britain used chiefs and France did not" is the start. Say what the chief was asked to do, or what the French official did instead.

What earns the marks
Indirect rule is not "the British were kind". It was still colonial rule. Name the example: Northern Nigeria for indirect rule, French West Africa for assimilation. A difference needs both sides. Tax, labour and cash crops are economic points. Courts, chiefs and language are political points. Do not put them in one sentence and hope the marker splits them.

What is the difference between indirect rule and assimilation?+
Indirect rule governed through chiefs, with the clearest British example in Northern Nigeria. Assimilation put French officials, French law and the French language in front. Both were colonial rule. Neither asked the people for consent.
Is indirect rule the same as independence?+
No. The chief worked inside a colony. A British officer could overrule him. Independence is when the people of the territory govern themselves. All WASSCE History past questions
