After the BECE

Choosing an SHS programme

What the main Senior High School programmes in Ghana are for, which BECE grades count toward placement, and how CSSPS uses the programme you choose. GLearn does not place students.

Junior high students in Ghana sit the BECE, and that result is used to place them into a senior high school or a technical institute. The placement is a school and a programme together. The programme is the set of subjects you will study, and it shapes the work you can do after SHS.

This page explains the main programmes, what each one can lead to, which BECE subjects sit inside the aggregate, and how CSSPS uses the programme you choose. It does not publish cut off aggregates, school fees, or a closing date. Those belong to the Ghana Education Service, to CSSPS, and to the school. GLearn does not place students.

The grades that count

CSSPS reads an aggregate of six BECE grades. The four cores are English Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Science is the paper some notes call Integrated Science. Add the two best grades from the other subjects you sat. Each grade is a number from 1 to 9. Grade 1 is the strongest, so a lower total is better. The scale runs from 6 to 54. Those two numbers are the ends of the scale. They are not a cut off for any programme.

The same six grades are used whichever programme you want. There is not a separate aggregate for science and another for arts. A programme does not have a grade you must hit on this page, because GLearn does not have one and will not invent one. WAEC sets and marks the BECE. A percentage on a school test is not a BECE grade.

The programmes

The Ghana Education Service register of courses is the list of programmes a school may offer. On recent registers the columns include Agricultural Science, Business, Technical, Home Economics, Visual Arts, General Arts and General Science. Some schools are also marked for STEM or for Languages. A school with no mark for a programme does not offer it. Ask your school for the register for your year, or read it where the Ghana Education Service publishes it. GLearn does not republish that file.

General Science

Where it can lead

Students choose General Science when they want to continue in science. It is the usual path toward health courses, engineering, computing and other science degrees. A university or a training college publishes its own entry rules. A place on General Science is not an offer from a university.

BECE subjects to take seriously

Mathematics and Science are the BECE subjects this programme continues, and both are cores in the aggregate. English Language and Social Studies still count. The two best other grades count too. A low grade in Mathematics or Science is a reason to practise those papers. It is not a cut off written here.

Before you choose it

The subjects you will sit at WASSCE depend on the school and on the curriculum for your year. Do not assume every General Science class sits the same electives. Your school, and the official subject list for that curriculum, are the list.

General Arts

Where it can lead

General Arts is the broad programme for languages, history, government, religious studies and related subjects, in the combination the school offers. Students use it toward law, teaching, journalism, languages and public service. The institution you apply to later sets the subjects and grades it wants.

BECE subjects to take seriously

English Language is the core this programme leans on, and Social Studies is the other core closest to it. Mathematics and Science still count in the aggregate. You do not skip them because you prefer arts.

Before you choose it

Schools do not all offer the same arts subjects. Literature, economics, geography, government, history, religious studies, French and a Ghanaian language are examples, not a promise that your school teaches each one.

Business

Where it can lead

Business prepares you for accounting, banking, management and marketing, and for further study in those fields. Entry rules are set by the university, the technical university or the college, not by this page.

BECE subjects to take seriously

Mathematics is the core this programme uses most. English Language matters for every later course, and it is a core. Social Studies and Science still sit in the aggregate. A business choice does not remove Science from the six grades.

Before you choose it

The business subjects at SHS vary by school. Read the register before you treat one school as if it teaches the same business subjects as another.

Visual Arts

Where it can lead

Visual Arts is for students who want to study art and design. It can lead to creative work, design courses and teaching in that field. Some architecture and design courses also ask for mathematics. Check the institution. This page does not list its grades.

BECE subjects to take seriously

The aggregate is still the same six grades. Work you made in class is not a BECE grade unless it was a subject you sat and WAEC graded. Practise the four cores. Your two best other grades still help the total.

Before you choose it

The art subjects differ by school. The register is the list, not a guess from the school name.

Home Economics

Where it can lead

Home Economics is the programme for food, clothing, management in the home and hospitality. It can lead to work and further study in those fields, including teaching them. The institution sets its own entry rules.

BECE subjects to take seriously

Science is useful later for food and nutrition, and Mathematics is useful for the numbers in management. Both are cores, so they already count. English Language and Social Studies count too. None of that is a grade this page requires.

Before you choose it

Confirm that the school offers Home Economics. A school that does not list it cannot place you on it.

Agricultural Science

Where it can lead

Agricultural Science is for students who want to study farming, crops, animals and agribusiness. It can lead to further agricultural study and to work on the land or in that business. A course such as veterinary medicine may ask for science subjects. Check the institution.

BECE subjects to take seriously

Science and Mathematics are the cores this programme continues. English Language and Social Studies still count in the six. There is no agricultural cut off on this page.

Before you choose it

Not every school has a farm programme. The register shows which ones do.

Technical and TVET

Where it can lead

Technical programmes, including TVET at a technical or vocational institute, place you into a trade or a technology. Building, electrical work, mechanical work, fashion and hospitality are examples of the kind of programme the register lists. The appendix of the register names the actual trades. This page does not copy that appendix. The path can lead to skilled work and to further study at a technical university or a similar institution. It is a full placement. A later course that asks for the science electives of a General Science class may not treat a technical programme as the same thing. Read that institution's own rules.

BECE subjects to take seriously

Mathematics and Science prepare you for technical work, and both count in the aggregate. The formula does not change because the programme is technical.

Before you choose it

If you want only TVET institutes, the guidelines for the year say how to fill the form. Follow that file. GLearn does not restate the category rules, because a copied rule goes stale.

Also on recent registers

STEM

Where it can lead

Some schools are STEM schools, and some senior high schools offer STEM subjects. The register points those rows to its STEM appendix. The selection guidelines for the year say how to use a science or STEM choice. Read that file. This page does not turn it into a required grade.

BECE subjects to take seriously

Mathematics and Science are the cores to practise. The aggregate is still six grades, with the two best other grades added.

Before you choose it

Open the register appendix for the subjects. Do not invent a STEM list from a school nickname.

Languages

Where it can lead

Some schools are marked for a Languages programme. It is for students who want to go further in languages than the General Arts combination at that school may allow. The register shows which schools offer it.

BECE subjects to take seriously

English Language is the core to take seriously. A Ghanaian language or French, if you sat it, can be one of the two best other grades. It is not a separate aggregate.

Before you choose it

If the register for your year has no Languages column, do not assume the programme exists that year.

How CSSPS uses the programme

CSSPS is the Computerised School Selection and Placement System. The Ghana Education Service uses it to place BECE candidates. On the school selection form you choose schools you would actually attend. For each school you choose a programme that school offers, and you choose day or boarding. CSSPS matches candidates to those choices. The match uses your aggregate, your raw scores, the programmes you listed, and the places those programmes still have.

A popular programme can fill before a less requested one in the same school. Two candidates with the same aggregate can be placed differently. The Ministry of Education has said placement is not a rigid aggregate score system. GLearn does not publish a cut off for a school or for a programme.

Your placement, when it comes, names the school, the programme, and day or boarding. Changing the programme later is a matter for the school and the Ghana Education Service. Do not count on a change. Choose the programme you want on the form.

The guidelines for the year say how many schools you may list and how the categories work. Read that file. This page does not copy the numbers. Check the rules, and when placement is out the result, on the official CSSPS portal. GLearn cannot show your placement and cannot change it.

How CSSPS placement worksCSSPS placement portal

How to choose

  1. 1. Start from the work, then the programme

Name the work you want to do after school, then the programme that leads toward it, then schools that offer that programme. A famous school on the wrong programme is the wrong choice.

  2. 2. Read the register before you choose the school

The register for your year says which programmes each school offers. If the programme is not listed, you cannot be placed on it. GLearn does not keep a copy of that register.

  3. 3. Include schools you would be glad to attend

Rank the schools in the order you prefer. Include more than the most famous names. A programme many people want can fill. GLearn does not rank schools.

  4. 4. Decide day or boarding for each school

Day or boarding is part of the match, not a detail you can fix later. A day school should be one you can reach.

  5. 5. Let a parent or guardian read the list

Read the finished list together and keep a copy. Then confirm it on the official portal before placement runs. Do not pay a person who offers to choose the school for you.

  6. 6. Practise the four cores now

English Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies are in every aggregate. The two best other grades can still lift the total, so practise the other subjects you are entered for as well. University admission is a later step, after the WASSCE, and it is not decided by this form.

Questions about SHS programmes

Which SHS programme is the best?+

The one that matches the work you want, at a school you would actually attend and that offers it. General Science is not above Technical, and General Arts is not a consolation prize. GLearn does not rank programmes or schools.

What BECE grade do I need for General Science?+

This page does not give one. CSSPS uses your aggregate of six grades, your raw scores, your choices and the vacancies. Grade 1 is the strongest grade in a subject and grade 9 is the weakest. A lower aggregate is better. There is no cut off number here for General Science or for any other programme.

Do the same subjects count for every programme?+

Yes. The aggregate adds English Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, then the two best grades from your other subjects. The programme does not swap those cores out. What changes is which school and programme you ask for, and which subjects you will study after you are placed.

Can I pick a programme the school does not offer?+

No. Placement is into a programme the school runs. Check the register of courses for that year. A wish on the form is not a vacancy.

What is the difference between Technical and General Science?+

General Science is the school programme aimed at later science study. Technical and TVET programmes train a trade or a technology, and the register names the trades. Both are real placements. A later course that demands science electives may not treat them as the same. Read that institution's own rules.

Does a strong aggregate guarantee my first choice?+

No. The aggregate is one part of the match. The schools and programmes you listed, day or boarding, raw scores and vacancies are the rest. GLearn cannot reserve a school.

Can GLearn choose my programme?+

No. GLearn is exam prep. It does not run CSSPS, it does not see your placement, and it cannot change one. Use it to practise the BECE subjects in the aggregate. Kevin and Anna explain the answers.
