BECE ICT past questions and answers

Eight multiple choice and two written, marked as you go. Free, no account.

ObjectiveQ1 of 10BECE 2023

In the word processing document below, a wrongly spelt word has been underlined automatically. The tool that flags a wrongly spelt word like this is the

Word Processing

Answer: A. Spell checker.

When you type a word that is not in its dictionary, the spell checker marks it — usually with a red wavy underline — and can suggest the correct spelling. AutoCorrect automatically changes common typos as you type (it does not just flag them), Find and Replace searches for text you choose, and the grammar checker flags grammar or sentence problems (with a different underline), not spelling.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10BECE 2023

In the spreadsheet below, cell B2 is the active cell. Which feature (outlined in red and marked "?") displays the content of the active cell?

Spreadsheets

Answer: D. Formula bar

The Formula bar (the long box at the top, here outlined in red) shows the actual content of the active cell — its value or formula. Here cell B2 holds 250, so the formula bar also shows 250. The Name box (showing "B2") gives the cell's address, not its content; a column header is the letter (A, B, C) at the top of each column; and "cell address" is the reference like B2, not a display feature.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

Study the network diagram below. In this topology, what happens if the cable between Node B and Node C breaks?

Networking: Topologies

Answer: D. The entire network goes down

In a ring topology, data travels in one direction around the ring. If the cable between any two nodes breaks, the loop is broken and the entire network fails. This is a major disadvantage of ring topologies.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

Study the flowchart below. What shape is used for the START and STOP symbols?

Flowcharts and Algorithms

Answer: D. Oval (rounded rectangle)

In standard flowcharts, the oval (also called a rounded rectangle or terminal symbol) is used for START and STOP. Rectangles are for processes, diamonds for decisions, and parallelograms for input/output.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

Study the conversion steps shown in the diagram below. What is the binary equivalent of the decimal number 45?

Data Representation: Binary Numbers

Answer: B. 101101

Using repeated division by 2, the remainders read from bottom to top give the binary number. Reading upward: 1, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1 = 101101. Verification: 32 + 0 + 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 45.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

Study the spreadsheet below. What value will the formula =AVERAGE(B2:B6) display in cell B7?

Spreadsheets: Formulas and Functions

Answer: A. 70

AVERAGE adds all the values and divides by the count. Sum = 60 + 80 + 70 + 55 + 85 = 350. Count = 5 students. Average = 350 / 5 = 70.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

Study the spreadsheet below. If cell D2 contains the formula =B2+C2, what value will be displayed in D2?

Spreadsheets: Cell References

Answer: B. 83

The formula =B2+C2 adds the value in cell B2 (which is 45) to the value in cell C2 (which is 38). So D2 = 45 + 38 = 83. Cell references in formulas tell the spreadsheet which cells to use for the calculation.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

Study the block diagram of a computer system below. Which block labeled in the diagram represents the component that performs calculations and logical operations?

Computer Hardware: Block Diagram

Answer: B. Block B — CPU

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the brain of the computer. It contains the ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit) which performs all calculations and logical operations. Block B is labeled CPU in the diagram.

TheoryQ9 of 104 marksBECE 2024

Differentiate between the Save and the Save As commands, and give one example of when each is used.

Marking guide

Save and Save As both store your work, but they behave differently:

Save — stores the changes to the CURRENT file, keeping the same name, location and format (it overwrites the existing copy). If the file has never been saved before, Save behaves like Save As and asks for a name. Example: after editing a report you press Ctrl + S to update the same file.

Save As — stores the file as a NEW copy, letting you choose a different name, location (folder/drive) or file format, while the original copy is left unchanged.
Example: saving "Report.docx" as "Report_v2.pdf" so you keep the first version and also make a PDF.

Marking guide (4 marks): 1 mark for explaining Save; 1 mark for explaining Save As; 1 mark for a correct example of Save; 1 mark for a correct example of Save As.

Discuss one feature of fourth-generation computers in terms of each of the following:(a) Cost(b) Speed(c) Size

a

Cost

b

Speed

c

Size

Answer the parts you can. Everything you write is marked together.

Marking guide

(a) Cost (1 mark):
Fourth-generation computers are cheaper and more affordable, mass-produced microprocessor chips greatly reduced the price, so individuals, schools and small businesses could own one.

(b) Speed (1 mark):
They are much faster, the microprocessor can carry out millions of instructions per second, far quicker than earlier generations.

(c) Size (1 mark):
They are much smaller, from room-sized machines down to desktop, laptop and handheld computers.

Marking guide (3 marks): award 1 mark for a correct feature under each heading (cost, speed, size).

Questions about BECE ICT on GLearn

Are these real BECE ICT past questions?+

Some are from past papers and show their year. The rest are written in the style of the BECE, and every one comes with the correct answer and a worked explanation.

Can I get my written answers marked?+

Yes, on this page: type your answer and the coach marks it with AI and shows you where the marks are, a few a day with no account. Inside GLearn, every answer you write.

Do I need an account for this page?+

No. You need one only to save your score and to keep going once the free marking for the day is used.

Will these exact questions come in my exam?+

Nobody can promise that. These test the same topics and the same kind of thinking the BECE does, which is what practice is for. There are thousands more across BECE and WASSCE inside GLearn; this page shows a small sample.
