BECE ICT: The internet

The internet is a worldwide network of computers. A browser is the program you use to open pages on it.

The idea

Computers join the internet through a service provider, by cable or by wireless. Information moves in small packets and is reassembled at the other end. The World Wide Web is one service on the internet: pages linked together and read in a browser. Email is another service. They are not the same thing. You can send email without opening a web page, and the internet existed as a network before the web of pages.

A web address, called a URL, tells the browser which page to fetch. A search engine helps you find a page when you do not know the address. Anyone can publish a page, so a result is not automatically true. Check who wrote it and whether it matches what you already know from a textbook. On a school computer, download only what a teacher expects, and do not type a password into a page you reached from an unexpected message.

What earns the marks

Internet and World Wide Web are not interchangeable. The internet is the network. The web is a service on it. A browser is software, not the internet itself. Safety points should be specific: do not share a password, do not trust a strange link, log out on a shared machine. "Be careful online" earns nothing.

Questions about The internet

Is the internet the same as the World Wide Web?+

No. The internet is the network. The World Wide Web is one service on that network, made of linked pages that a browser displays. Email is a different service on the same network.

What is a URL?+

It is the address of a page. The browser uses it to request that page. If you do not know the address, a search engine can suggest pages, and you still open them in the browser. All BECE ICT past questions
