WASSCE Visual Arts: Colour and painting

In paint, red, yellow and blue are the primary colours. Mixing, the colour wheel, and the words tint and shade are the usual questions.

The idea

This page is about paint, not about light on a screen. In paint the primary colours are red, yellow and blue. They cannot be mixed from other paints. Red and yellow make orange. Blue and yellow make green. Blue and red make violet. Those three are the secondary colours. Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel: red and green, blue and orange, yellow and violet. Placed side by side they strengthen each other. Mixed together they dull each other. Warm colours are red, orange and yellow. Cool colours are blue, green and violet.

A tint is a colour plus white. It is lighter. A shade is a colour plus black. It is darker. A tone is a colour plus grey. Say which word the question used. A painting answer should also name the medium if the question asks for it, such as watercolour or acrylic, and one thing that medium does. Watercolour is transparent, so the white of the paper is the light. Do not claim a mixing result you have not stated the two colours for. White does not turn red and blue into orange.

The Visual Arts tips guide sets out the papers, how to answer a theme, and the mistakes that cost marks. WASSCE Visual Arts tips

What earns the marks

Name the two colours in a mix. Green is blue and yellow, not red and yellow. Tint means white added. Shade means black added. Do not swap them. Complementary is a pair of opposites, not any two colours you like. If you discuss light from a lamp, say so. The primary colours of paint are not the primary colours of a screen.

Practice questions

These are practice questions in the style of the paper, with a model answer and a mark scheme. They are not a promise of what your paper will ask.

Questions about Colour and painting

Which colours are primary in paint?+

Red, yellow and blue. Orange, green and violet are mixed from those, so they are secondary. The primary colours of light on a screen are a different set. Say that you mean paint.

What is the difference between a tint and a shade?+

A tint adds white and is lighter. A shade adds black and is darker. A tone adds grey. Do not swap tint and shade. All WASSCE Visual Arts past questions
