Home management is the use of time, money, energy and equipment so the household runs safely. A clean house is one result. It is not the whole subject.
The idea
Resources are what the household has to work with: time, energy, money, skills and equipment. A budget is a plan for money coming in and money going out. Needs, such as food and school costs, come before wants. A budget is a plan. It is not a record of what you already spent, though you can compare the two later. Cleaning has an order. Dust before you sweep, or the dust settles on the clean floor. Soap lathers poorly in hard water and leaves a scum, because hard water holds dissolved minerals. A detergent is made to clean in hard water and does not leave that scum. Soft water lathers readily with soap. Name the water and the cleaner together.
Safety is specific. Turn saucepan handles inward so they are not knocked. Store bleach and other chemicals away from food and out of the reach of children. Do not leave a trailing flex across a floor. Put a flame out before you leave the room. Food waste should be covered and removed, or it attracts pests. Ventilation brings in fresh air and reduces damp and smell. These are precautions with a reason. "Be careful" does not earn the mark. Personal hygiene, such as washing hands before cooking, protects the food. Household cleaning protects the room. They can appear in one question and still be two points.

What earns the marks
A resource must be named. "Manage the home well" is not a resource. Budget answers should say it is a plan, and that needs come before wants when money is short. Cleaning answers should name the agent and the surface or the water. Hard water and soap is a pair. Safety answers should be an action plus a reason: handles inward so they are not knocked, chemicals away from food so nobody eats them. Two precautions that are really one, such as "be careful" and "take care", earn one mark at most.
Practice questions
These are practice questions in the style of the paper, with a model answer and a mark scheme. They are not a promise of what your paper will ask.
1Question 1
4 marks
(a) State two resources a household manages. (2 marks)
(b) What is a household budget? (2 marks)
Model answer
(a) Time and money.
(b) A plan of the money the household expects to receive and how it will be spent.
Mark scheme
One resource, such as time, money, energy, skills or equipment1 mark
A second resource, different from the first1 mark
A plan, not only a record of spending1 mark
It covers income and spending1 mark
2Question 2
3 marks
Explain why soap is a poor cleaner in hard water, and name a cleaner that works better there. (3 marks)
Model answer
Hard water contains dissolved minerals. Soap reacts with them and forms scum, so it does not lather well. A detergent cleans in hard water without that scum.
Mark scheme
Hard water contains dissolved minerals, or soap does not lather well1 mark
Soap forms scum1 mark
A detergent1 mark
3Question 3
4 marks
State two safety precautions in a kitchen, each with a reason. (4 marks)
Model answer
Turn saucepan handles inward so they are not knocked off the cooker. Store bleach away from food so it cannot be mistaken for a drink or get into a meal.
Mark scheme
One precaution, such as handles inward, chemicals stored apart, or no trailing flex1 mark
The reason for that precaution1 mark
A second precaution, different from the first1 mark
The reason for the second precaution1 mark

What is the difference between soap and detergent in hard water?+
Hard water holds dissolved minerals. Soap forms a scum with them and lathers poorly. A detergent is made to clean in that water and does not leave the same scum.
What should a household budget include?+
The money expected to come in, and how it will be spent, with needs before wants. It is a plan. A list of what you spent last week is a record, which you can compare with the plan later. All BECE Career Technology past questions
