BECE French: Grammar

Grammar marks come from the form that fits the sentence: the article, the verb, and the words that agree with the noun.

The idea

Every noun in French has a gender. Le and un go with a masculine noun. La and une go with a feminine noun. Les and des are plural. The adjective follows that noun: petit garçon, petite fille, petits garçons, petites filles. Learn the article with the noun, because the gender is part of the word. A bare noun is harder to use in a sentence.

The verb changes with the person. Je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont. A past tense needs the right auxiliary and the right ending. The near future is aller plus the infinitive: je vais manger. Negation wraps the verb: je ne mange pas. When you are asked to put a verb in brackets into the sentence, write the form that matches the subject, not the infinitive you were given.

The French tips guide sets grammar beside the rest of the paper, including agreement and the verb forms. BECE French tips

What earns the marks

One form, one mark. The infinitive that was in the brackets is not the answer. Agreement is a separate mark from the choice of tense: elles sont contentes needs the plural and the feminine ending. à and a are different words. ou and où are different words. An accent that changes the meaning is part of the spelling.

Questions about Grammar

Where does a French adjective go?+

Most adjectives follow the noun: une maison blanche. A short group comes before it, including petit, grand, bon, beau and jeune. The ending still has to agree with the noun.

What is the near future in French?+

It is the present of aller plus the infinitive. Je vais manger means I am going to eat. The infinitive does not change. Aller does. All BECE French past questions
