Vocabulary is the store of words you can use. On this paper a word is worth more when you know its gender and can put it in a sentence.
The areas that come up again and again are school, family, the town, health, food, travel and work. Learn each noun with le or la. La mère, le père, le marché, l'hôpital, l'école. A list of English words with no article will not help you write a sentence. Ten words, each in one sentence you can say aloud, teaches more than a long list you only recognise.
When a question asks for the French of an English word, give the article if it is a noun. When it asks you to complete a sentence, the word has to fit the meaning and the grammar. A food word does not fill a gap about a profession. Opposites and families of words are useful: chaud and froid, vendre and acheter, le matin and le soir. Say them, then cover the list and write them again.

A noun without its article is a weaker answer when the question asks for the French word. Spelling counts, including the accent: école is not ecole in a careful answer, and à is not a. If the question says "one word", do not write a sentence. If it says "a sentence", a single word is not enough.
