WASSCE Christian Religious Studies: The early church

Acts tells how the followers of Jesus became a church. Pentecost, the life in Jerusalem, and the travel of Paul are the spine of that story.

The idea

At Pentecost the Holy Spirit comes on the disciples. They speak about Jesus to the crowd in Jerusalem, and Peter preaches. The church that follows shares, prays, and teaches. Do not describe Pentecost as only a loud wind. The point in Acts is that the Spirit sends the disciples out to speak. People are baptised and added to the community. Opposition appears early. Stephen is killed. The message does not stay inside one city.

Paul begins as a man who persecutes the church. On the road to Damascus he meets Jesus and is sent to people who are not Jews, the Gentiles. That mission is why the early church has to decide how Gentiles belong. Acts records a meeting in Jerusalem about whether they must take on the whole law of Moses. The decision is that they belong without that whole burden. Peter and Paul are not the same person. Peter is prominent in the first chapters in Jerusalem. Paul carries the message through other cities. Name the person the question asked for, and the event, not a blended "the apostles did everything".

What earns the marks

Pentecost is the Spirit and the preaching, not a mood. Paul's conversion is a change of task: from persecutor to apostle. The Jerusalem meeting is about the Gentiles and the law, not about a building. If you are asked for two results of Pentecost, "they felt happy" and "they were excited" are one point. Speaking about Jesus, baptism, and a shared life are different points. Do not call the book of Acts a Gospel.
