WASSCE Ghanaian Language: Grammar

Grammar on this paper is the form that fits the sentence in your language. The name of an English rule is not the answer.

The idea

The objective paper tests lexis and structure: the word that fits, the form of the verb, agreement, and the order of the sentence. The questions are in the language of your entry. Choose the form a speaker of that language would use in that sentence. Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante do not share every form. An Ewe sentence is not repaired by a Ga word. A Dangme form is not a Ga form. Learn the items inside sentences, not as a list of English terms.

A written answer that asks you to correct a sentence should give the corrected sentence, not only the name of the fault. If it asks for the meaning of a word, give the meaning in the way the question asks, and keep it short. A proverb or a long story is a different part of the paper. Show the form, then stop. Guessing a form from English word order is a common way to miss the item, because the order in your language may not follow English.

The BECE Ghanaian Language tips guide sets out comprehension, composition, grammar, literature, culture and translation. At WASSCE you sit the language on your entry, including Akan, Ewe, Ga and the others. Start practising on glearn.now with Kevin and Anna. BECE Ghanaian Language tips

What earns the marks

The correct option is the form that fits that sentence in that language. An explanation that only says "it is grammar" does not name the form. In a written correction, the marker needs the repaired sentence. Do not answer an Akan item with an Ewe form, or a Ga item with a Dangme form. If you are not sure, choose the form you have heard in the variety on your entry, and do not mix varieties in one sentence.

Practice questions

These are practice questions in the style of the paper, with a model answer and a mark scheme. They are not a promise of what your paper will ask.

1Question 1

2 marks

What does a lexis and structure item test? (2 marks)

Model answer

It tests the word or the form that fits a sentence in the language of the entry. That includes meaning, the verb, agreement, and word order.

Mark scheme

  • The word or the form that fits the sentence1 mark
  • In the language of the entry, not as an English rule name alone1 mark

2Question 2

2 marks

A question asks you to correct a sentence. Why is the name of the error not enough? (2 marks)

Model answer

The mark is for the sentence written correctly. Naming the error does not show the form that should replace it.

Mark scheme

  • The corrected sentence is what is marked1 mark
  • The name of the error does not supply the form1 mark

3Question 3

2 marks

Why can two Akan entries give different answers to the same kind of item? (2 marks)

Model answer

Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante are separate varieties. A form that is right in one can be wrong in another. You answer in the variety on your entry.

Mark scheme

  • The varieties are not the same paper1 mark
  • A form from one variety may be wrong in the other1 mark

Questions about Grammar

Is grammar on this paper the same as English grammar?+

No. The item asks for the form in the language of your entry. An English term, with no sentence in that language, does not answer it. Word order may not follow English.

Can I mix Asante Twi and Akuapem Twi in one answer?+

No. Sit the variety on your entry and stay in it. Fante is a further paper. Ewe, Ga and Dangme are not Akan. One sentence should not borrow a form from a different entry. All WASSCE Ghanaian Language past questions
