WASSCE Technical Drawing: Lines and lettering

The line you choose is part of the drawing. A correct shape drawn with the wrong line is still wrong.

The idea

A thick continuous line is a visible outline. A thin continuous line is used for construction, for projection, and for dimension and extension lines. A dashed line shows an edge you cannot see from that view. A chain line, a long stroke with a short stroke, marks a centre. A cutting plane line shows where a section is taken. Lettering on a formal drawing is upright, of one height, usually in capitals, and written between light guidelines. Space the letters so the gap looks even. Do not let letters touch, and do not decorate them.

A dimension tells the maker a size. Place it outside the view when you can. An extension line starts with a small gap from the object and does not stop short of the dimension line. Arrowheads or ticks touch the extension lines. Figures are written so they can be read from the bottom of the sheet or from the right. Do not repeat a size that is already given. Do not use a centre line as a dimension line. Instruments have jobs. A tee square draws horizontal lines. A set square with the tee square draws vertical lines and lines at 30, 45 and 60 degrees. A compass draws circles. A scale rule measures. A protractor measures an angle.

What earns the marks

Name the line and what it means. An outline drawn thin, or a hidden edge drawn solid, loses the mark even when the shape is right. A dimension needs the size and a line that a maker can read. "It is labelled" does not say where the figure sits. If the question says sketch, instruments are not required. If it says draw, they are.

Practice questions

These are practice questions in the style of the paper, with a model answer and a mark scheme. They are not a promise of what your paper will ask.

1Question 1

3 marks

State the use of a thick continuous line, a dashed line, and a chain line. (3 marks)

Model answer

A thick continuous line is a visible outline. A dashed line is a hidden edge. A chain line is a centre line.

Mark scheme

  • Thick continuous line: visible outline1 mark
  • Dashed line: hidden edge1 mark
  • Chain line: centre line1 mark

2Question 2

2 marks

State two rules for placing a dimension on a drawing. (2 marks)

Model answer

Place the dimension outside the view when you can. Write the figure so it can be read from the bottom of the sheet or from the right. Do not repeat a size.

Mark scheme

  • A true rule, such as placing the dimension outside the view, or leaving a gap before the extension line1 mark
  • A second true rule, such as the direction of the figures, or not repeating a size1 mark

3Question 3

2 marks

Explain why equal measured gaps between letters can still look uneven. (2 marks)

Model answer

Letters have different shapes. A round letter and a straight letter leave different areas of white even when the measured gap is the same. The space is judged by eye so the gap looks even.

Mark scheme

  • Letter shapes leave different areas of white1 mark
  • The space is judged so the gap looks even1 mark

Questions about Lines and lettering

Which line shows an edge I cannot see?+

A dashed line. A thick continuous line is a visible outline. A chain line is a centre. A thin continuous line is for construction or a dimension. The line type is marked on its own.

Where do I write a dimension figure?+

So it can be read from the bottom of the sheet or from the right. Keep the dimension outside the view when you can, and do not repeat a size that is already given. All WASSCE Technical Drawing past questions
