WASSCE Technical Drawing past questions and answers

Eight multiple choice and two written, marked as you go. Free, no account.

ObjectiveQ1 of 10

Which line shows an edge that cannot be seen from that view?

Lines and lettering

Answer: B. A dashed line

A dashed line is a hidden edge. A thick continuous line is a visible outline. A chain line is a centre. A wavy line is not the outline of a hidden edge. The line type is marked even when the shape is right, so a solid line in place of a dashed line loses the point.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

How should a dimension figure be placed so it can be read?

Lines and lettering

Answer: B. From the bottom of the sheet or from the right

Figures are written so they can be read from the bottom of the sheet or from the right. A centre line is not a dimension line. Repeating a size adds nothing and can contradict the first figure. Keep the dimension outside the view when you can, with a small gap before the extension line.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

When you bisect a line, how far must the compass be opened?

Geometrical construction

Answer: B. More than half the line, and the same from both ends

The compass is opened to more than half the line, and that same opening is used from both ends. The arcs then cross twice. The line that joins the crossings is the perpendicular bisector. If the opening is half or less, the arcs may not cross, and there is no bisector to join.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

A tangent touches a circle at P. What is the angle between the tangent and the radius to P?

Geometrical construction

Answer: B. A right angle

The radius to the point of contact is perpendicular to the tangent, so the angle is a right angle. A chord would cut the circle in two points. A tangent touches at one point only. The isometric angle of 30 degrees belongs to pictorial drawing, not to this construction.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

In first angle projection, where is the plan placed?

Orthographic projection

Answer: B. Below the front view

In first angle projection the plan is placed below the front view. In third angle it is placed above the front view. The view from the left is placed on the right in first angle, and on the left in third angle. Name the system. A plan drawn inside the front view is not a projection layout.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

In third angle projection, where is the view from the left placed?

Orthographic projection

Answer: B. On the left of the front view

In third angle the view from the left is placed on the left of the front view, and the plan is placed above the front view. First angle puts that left view on the right. A second plan is not an end view. An end view shows the depth the front view cannot.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

Which statement is true of isometric drawing?

Pictorial drawing

Answer: B. The axes are a vertical and two at 30 degrees, all to the same scale

Isometric axes are one vertical and two at 30 degrees to the horizontal, with the same scale on each. Parallel edges stay parallel. A vanishing point belongs to perspective. A true front face with half depth is cabinet oblique. A circle on an isometric face is drawn as an ellipse.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

What is the development of a right cylinder?

Sections and developments

Answer: B. A rectangle whose width is the circumference and whose height is the height of the cylinder

A right cylinder develops as a rectangle. The width is the circumference of the base and the height is the height of the cylinder. A right cone develops as a sector whose radius is the slant height. Hatching belongs to a section, not to a development. Do not hatch the flat pattern.

TheoryQ9 of 103 marks
