WASSCE Islamic Studies past questions and answers

Eight multiple choice and two written, marked as you go. Free, no account.

ObjectiveQ1 of 10

The Hijrah was a journey between which two cities?

The life of the Prophet

Answer: A. Makkah and Madinah

The Hijrah took the Prophet and the Muslims from Makkah to Madinah after Makkah rejected the message. Damascus, Cairo and Baghdad are not the two cities of that journey. Naming only one city, or swapping the direction, misses the event the question asked for.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

Which statement about Hudaybiyyah is correct?

The life of the Prophet

Answer: B. It was a treaty, not a battle

Hudaybiyyah was an agreement, a treaty. Badr, Uhud and Khandaq are the battles, and they are different events. The first revelation is the call. The Farewell Pilgrimage comes later. Calling Hudaybiyyah a battle mixes two kinds of event and loses the point.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

Who arranged one standard text of the Qur'an and sent copies to the main cities?

The rightly guided caliphs

Answer: C. Uthman

Uthman is associated with the single standard text and with sending copies out so the recitation would agree. Abu Bakr is associated with the earlier order to collect the Qur'an into writing. Umar is remembered for government and for the calendar counted from the Hijrah. A West African trader is part of a different topic.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

Which pair best explains how Islam spread in West Africa?

The rightly guided caliphs

Answer: A. Traders and teachers along the routes

Traders crossed the Sahara and teachers taught. The pilgrimage also linked West Africa to the wider Muslim world. Ghana, Mali, Songhai and Kanem Borno are the places the syllabus names. Badr is a battle in the life of the Prophet. The standard text of the Qur'an is Uthman's work. A Gospel belongs to a different paper.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

Al Ikhlas teaches which of the following?

The Qur'an

Answer: A. Allah is one and has no equal

Al Ikhlas teaches that Allah is one, needs nothing, does not beget and was not begotten, and has no equal. It is not a battle narrative. Kente is cloth, and it is not this chapter. The pillars of Islam are a different list from the teaching of this short chapter. Give the meaning, not a topic from another section.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

A Makki chapter is a chapter that was what?

The Qur'an

Answer: B. Revealed in Makkah

Makki means revealed in Makkah. Madani means revealed in Madinah. The two sets are not the same chapters, so the labels cannot be swapped. Uthman arranged a standard text later. A hadith is a report of the Prophet, not a chapter label. If you are not sure of a chapter, do not guess the label.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

In a hadith, what is the Isnad?

Hadith and the Sunnah

Answer: A. The chain of narrators

Isnad is the chain of narrators. Matn is the text. Rawi is a narrator. The pillars are practices, not parts of a report. The Hijrah is a journey, not a term in hadith study. Swapping Isnad and Matn is a common way to lose the mark.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

Which list names pillars of Islam, not articles of faith?

Tawhid and worship

Answer: A. Prayer, zakat and fasting

The pillars include the declaration of faith, prayer, zakat, fasting and the pilgrimage. Angels, books and messengers are articles of faith, a different list. The three battles belong to the life of the Prophet. The caliphs are leaders, not pillars. Do not mix the two lists in one answer.
