ObjectiveQ1 of 10

Which fibre is a natural plant fibre?

Fibres and fabrics

Answer: C. Cotton

Cotton grows as a seed hair on the cotton plant. It is cellulose. Nylon and polyester are synthetic fibres made from chemicals. Silk is an animal fibre, the filament from the silkworm, and it is a protein. Classify the fibre before you name a use or a wash.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

A twill weave is recognised by which of the following?

Fibres and fabrics

Answer: A. A diagonal line on the cloth

A twill weave moves the interlacing along each row, so a diagonal line shows. Denim is a twill. Loops belong to a knitted fabric, which stretches. The selvedge is the finished edge of a woven cloth, not a weave. Long floats with a smooth face describe satin. The structure is the mark.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

Which tool should be kept for cutting fabric only?

Sewing tools and processes

Answer: B. Shears

Shears have long blades and are kept for fabric. Cutting paper with them blunts the edge, so the next cut on cloth is ragged. Scissors are the shorter tool for thread and paper. A seam ripper unpicks stitches. A tape measure takes measurements. Chalk marks the cloth. The job decides the tool.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

A French seam is used mainly because it does which of the following?

Sewing tools and processes

Answer: B. Encloses the raw edges, which suits a fine fraying cloth

A French seam is stitched first with the wrong sides together, trimmed, then stitched again with the right sides together so the raw edges are hidden. That finish suits fine cloth that would fray. A plain seam leaves the raw edges inside unless they are finished another way. The seam is still stitching. It does not cut the cloth.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

Ease in a pattern is which of the following?

Pattern drafting

Answer: B. Extra room beyond the body measurement so the person can move

Ease is planned extra room. Without it a garment cut to the bare body measurement is hard to wear, because the person has to sit and breathe. It is not a measuring error. The selvedge is the finished edge of woven cloth. A dart takes in fullness. It is a different marking.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

The grainline on a pattern piece should be placed how?

Pattern drafting

Answer: B. Parallel to the selvedge

The grainline is laid parallel to the selvedge so the warp runs the way the garment should hang. If it is ignored, the piece is off grain and the garment twists. Notches show which edges join. They are not the grainline. A nap fabric also needs every piece facing one way.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

Why is wool washed with little rubbing?

Care of clothing

Answer: A. Rubbing and heat make the fibres lock and felt

Wool is a protein fibre with scales. Heat, moisture and rubbing make those scales lock, so the garment shrinks and thickens. That is felting. Wool is not a plant fibre. Rubbing does not add nylon. Wool does get dirty, and it should be clean before it is stored. The wash has to match the fibre.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

Profit on a dress sold by a seamstress is which of the following?

The clothing industry

Answer: B. What remains after the cost of making the dress

Profit is what remains after cost. The cost includes the fabric, the thread, the fastenings and the time. The price the customer paid still contains that cost, so the price alone is not the profit. Hem length and thread colour are construction points. They do not define profit. Do not invent a cedi figure.
