WASSCE General Knowledge in Art past questions and answers

Eight multiple choice and two written, marked as you go. Free, no account.

ObjectiveQ1 of 10

Which pair is an element and a principle, in that order?

Elements and principles

Answer: B. Colour and emphasis

Colour is an element. Emphasis is a principle. Balance, rhythm, unity and contrast are principles, not elements. The written paper keeps the two lists apart. Shape, form, line, texture and space are the other elements students are expected to name.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

Which statement is true of form?

Elements and principles

Answer: B. Form has depth and can be seen from more than one side

Form has depth. A pot you can walk around is a form. A circle on a page is a shape, and shape is flat. A letter is lettering. The speed of a song is not this paper. Calling shape and form the same word loses the mark.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

Which two primary colours mix to make orange?

Colour

Answer: B. Red and yellow

Red and yellow are primary colours and together they make orange, a secondary colour. Blue and yellow make green. Blue and red make violet. Green and violet are not the pair that makes orange. White only lightens a colour that is already there. It does not create orange.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

Which pair is complementary?

Colour

Answer: C. Yellow and violet

Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. Yellow and violet are one opposite pair. Red and green, and blue and orange, are the others. Red and orange sit beside each other, so they are analogous, not complementary. A guessed neighbour is not an opposite.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

Which feature belongs to Roman letters and not to plain block letters?

Lettering

Answer: A. A serif at the end of a stroke

A serif is the small foot at the end of a stroke. Roman letters have serifs and a thick and thin stroke. Block letters have an even stroke and no serifs. Guidelines and readability can belong to both. Do not call every thick stroke a serif.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

Which feature belongs to the Egyptian composite view of a standing figure?

Art history

Answer: B. The head in profile and the shoulders from the front

The Egyptian composite view shows each part in its clearest aspect. The head is in profile, the eye is frontal, the shoulders are frontal, and the legs are in profile. It is a convention for a complete body, not a camera snapshot and not linear perspective. Serifs belong to lettering.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

Which statement is true?

Ghanaian and African art

Answer: B. Kente is woven, and Adinkra symbols are printed

Kente is woven cloth. Adinkra symbols are printed onto cloth, and each symbol has a meaning you should give only when you know it. Benin bronzes are court metalwork, often cast by the lost wax method. They are not Kente. One cloth does not stand for the other.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

Why should a year you are not sure of be left out?

Art history

Answer: B. A wrong year is a false fact, and the feature can still be described

A year you invented is a false fact. The culture, the purpose and one visible feature can still score. Name an artist only when you can say what they made. Classical Greek art and Renaissance art are not the same stretch of time, so a guessed century does not help.
