ObjectiveQ1 of 10

Which statement best describes a loam soil?

Soil science

Answer: B. It is a mixture that can drain and still hold water and nutrients

Loam is a mixture of sand, silt and clay, usually with organic matter. It is not a fourth particle size. Sand drains quickly and holds little. Clay holds water and can drain poorly. A loam is used for many food crops because it does some of both jobs. Solid rock is not a soil texture class.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

Which practice best reduces erosion by water on a cultivated slope?

Soil science

Answer: C. Planting across the slope and keeping the soil covered

Water running straight downhill gathers speed and carries topsoil. Ploughing and planting across the slope, on the contour, slow that flow. A cover of plants or mulch stops raindrops from detaching soil. Bare ground and the removal of organic matter make erosion worse, not better.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

Why is tomato often raised in a nursery before transplanting?

Crop production

Answer: B. The seedlings are delicate and the farmer can select the strong ones

Tomato seed is small and the young plant is easily damaged, so a protected bed is easier to manage than a whole field of seedlings. At transplanting the farmer keeps the vigorous plants. Maize and groundnut are usually sown direct. A nursery still needs water. It does not replace watering, and tomato is a soil grown crop.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

What is the main reason for drying maize before it is stored?

Crop production

Answer: A. Dry grain is less likely to mould and to attract storage pests

Damp grain moulds and is more readily attacked by weevils and other storage insects. Drying does not add seeds to a cob that has already been harvested, and it does not remove the need for a store. The store still has to keep that dry grain where pests cannot easily enter. Drying is a step between harvest and sale or use.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

Which animal is a ruminant?

Animal production

Answer: C. Goat

A goat is a ruminant. It chews the cud and microbes in the rumen digest fibre, so it can live largely on forage. A broiler and a pig are non ruminants. They need a richer feed because they cannot use grass the way a goat can. A rabbit digests forage differently and is not classed with cattle, sheep and goats in this topic.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

Which description fits an intensive system of keeping poultry?

Animal production

Answer: B. Birds are housed, and the farmer supplies the feed and manages them closely

An intensive system confines the birds and supplies feed, water and close management. The cost is higher, and so is the output from a small piece of land. Birds that range and find their own feed are in an extensive system. Housing does not remove the need for water. A one day life is not a production system.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

A farmer sells produce for GH₵ 2,000. Total cost is GH₵ 1,500. What is the profit?

Agricultural economics

Answer: C. GH₵ 500

Profit is revenue minus total cost. 2,000 minus 1,500 is 500 cedis. Adding the two figures gives neither profit nor revenue. The 2,000 cedis is revenue, which still includes the costs. The 1,500 cedis is the cost, not the profit. A large sale can still leave a small profit when costs are high.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

Which tool is the most suitable for weeding between rows of growing maize?

Farm tools and mechanisation

Answer: B. Hoe

A hoe draws soil and cuts weeds at the root between crop rows. A watering can applies water. A wheelbarrow carries materials. A seed tray belongs in a nursery. Using the watering can as a weeding tool would not control the weeds, and it shows the tool was not matched to the task.

TheoryQ9 of 105 marks

(a) State one property of a sandy soil and one property of a clay soil. (2 marks)(b) Explain why many food crops are grown on a loam. (3 marks)

a

State one property of a sandy soil and one property of a clay soil. (2 marks)

b

Explain why many food crops are grown on a loam. (3 marks)

Answer the parts you can. Everything you write is marked together.

Marking guide

(a) Sand: fast drainage, poor nutrient holding, or easy to work: 1 mark. Clay: high water holding, slow drainage, or hardness when dry: 1 mark.

(b) Loam is a mixture rather than one particle size: 1 mark. It drains and still holds water or nutrients: 1 mark. That balance suits roots, which need air and moisture: 1 mark.

TheoryQ10 of 104 marks

State two advantages of mechanising land preparation, and two limits of using a tractor on a small farm with scattered plots. (4 marks)

Marking guide

One advantage, such as speed, timeliness or less drudgery: 1 mark. A second advantage, different from the first: 1 mark. One limit that fits small or scattered plots, such as cost, moving time or lack of turning room: 1 mark. A second limit, different from the first: 1 mark.
