WASSCE French past questions and answers

Eight multiple choice and two written, marked as you go. Free, no account.

ObjectiveQ1 of 10

Which sentence is correct?

Grammar

Answer: B. L'école est grande.

École begins with a vowel, so le and la become l'. Le école and la école leave the article unjoined, which is not the form. Les is plural, and est grande is singular, so that option disagrees with itself. The correct sentence is L'école est grande.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

Hier, Amina ___ au marché avec sa tante.

Grammar

Answer: B. est allée

Hier marks a finished event, so the tense is the passé composé. Aller uses être, and Amina is feminine singular, so the participle agrees: est allée. Va is present. Aller is the infinitive, which is the form in a bracket, not the answer. Allée on its own has no auxiliary.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

Choose the missing word:Paul ne comprend ___ la question.

Grammar

Answer: A. pas

Ne and pas wrap the verb in a simple negation: Paul ne comprend pas la question. Jamais would mean never, and it does not sit as two words in that gap. Aucun and personne replace a noun. They are not the second half of ne ... pas. The gap needs pas.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

Marie achète une robe. Elle ___ met dans le sac.

Grammar

Answer: B. la

Une robe is feminine singular, so the direct object pronoun is la: Elle la met dans le sac. Le would replace a masculine noun. Les would replace a plural. Lui is for a person who receives something, not for the dress itself. The pronoun has to match the noun it replaces.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

What does « bibliothèque » mean?

Vocabulary

Answer: C. A library

Une bibliothèque is a library, the place where books are kept and borrowed. A market is un marché. A kitchen is une cuisine. A hospital is un hôpital. Learn the noun with its article, la bibliothèque, so the gender is part of the word you revise.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

Chaque soir, nous ___ nos devoirs avant le repas.

Grammar

Answer: A. faisons

Chaque soir describes a present habit, so the present tense is the match: nous faisons. Avons fait is a finished event in the passé composé. Ferons is the future. Faire is the infinitive. A habit that is still true uses the present, not a past event and not a plan.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

Demain, je ___ le musée avec mon frère.

Grammar

Answer: B. visiterai

Demain places the visit in the future, so the futur simple is visiterai. Visite could be the present, which does not match demain. Visiter is the infinitive. Visitais is the imparfait, a habit or a background in the past. The time word in the sentence chooses the tense.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

Les filles sont ___.

Grammar

Answer: D. contentes

Filles is feminine plural, so the adjective takes e and s: contentes. Content is masculine singular. Contents would be masculine plural. Contente is feminine singular, which would fit one girl, not les filles. Agreement is a mark on its own, separate from knowing the adjective.
