WASSCE Clothing and Textiles: The clothing industry

Choice of clothes is a reason tied to the person. A small business answer separates the cost of making a garment from the profit.

The idea

People choose clothes for the climate, the occasion, the figure, the activity, the money available, and the care the fibre will need. A reason names one of those and the garment that fits it. Vertical lines can make a figure look taller. Horizontal lines can make it look wider. Warm colours seem to come forward. Cool colours seem to go back. A shiny texture catches light. A bulky texture adds size. Use one of these only when you can tie it to the person in the question. A wardrobe plan covers the activities of the week. One best outfit is not a wardrobe.

A small clothing business, such as a tailor or a seamstress working from a market or a home workshop, needs a product people will pay for, skill, and a record of costs. The cost is the fabric, the thread, the fastenings and the time. The selling price has to cover that cost. Profit is what remains after the cost. Quality shows in even stitches, a grain that hangs straight, a pattern that matches at the seams, and fastenings that hold. Food and Nutrition and Management in Living are different papers. A question here wants the cloth, the garment or the business, not a meal plan.

How to prepare for the Clothing and Textiles papers: fibres, seams, and the practical. WASSCE Clothing and Textiles tips

What earns the marks

A choice answer needs the person and the reason. "It is nice" earns nothing. Line and colour are principles, and they need the effect. Profit is not the selling price. Do not invent a cedi figure. Do not answer with a Food and Nutrition point.

Practice questions

These are practice questions in the style of the paper, with a model answer and a mark scheme. They are not a promise of what your paper will ask.

1Question 1

4 marks

Give two reasons a person might choose a loose cotton dress for work in a hot classroom. (4 marks)

Model answer

Cotton absorbs sweat, so it is comfortable in heat. A loose fit lets air move and is easy to work in. The colour and the care of the dress can be further reasons if they are tied to the job.

Mark scheme

  • One reason tied to heat, work, or the fibre2 marks
  • A second reason, different from the first2 marks

2Question 2

4 marks

(a) State what profit means for a seamstress. (2 marks)

(b) Name two costs she must cover before there is any profit. (2 marks)

Model answer

(a) Profit is the money left after the costs of making the garment are taken from the price the customer paid.

(b) The fabric and the thread. Fastenings and her time are also costs.

Mark scheme

  • Profit is what remains after cost1 mark
  • It is not the same as the price charged1 mark
  • One cost, such as fabric, thread, fastenings or labour1 mark
  • A second cost, different from the first1 mark

3Question 3

2 marks

Explain how vertical lines and horizontal lines can change the look of a figure. (2 marks)

Model answer

Vertical lines lead the eye up and down, so the figure can look taller. Horizontal lines lead the eye across, so the figure can look wider.

Mark scheme

  • Vertical lines can look taller, or lead the eye up1 mark
  • Horizontal lines can look wider, or lead the eye across1 mark

Questions about The clothing industry

What is the difference between cost and profit?+

Cost is what was spent to make the garment, such as fabric and thread. Profit is what remains after that cost is taken from the money received. The price on the tag is not the profit. Do not invent a figure.

Is this the same as Food and Nutrition?+

No. Both sit in Home Economics, and they are different papers. Clothing and Textiles is about fibres, garments, care and the clothing business. Use the Food and Nutrition guide for the food papers. All WASSCE Clothing and Textiles past questions
