WASSCE Islamic Studies: Hadith and the Sunnah

A hadith is a report of what the Prophet said or did. The Sunnah is his practice. They belong together, and they are not the same word.

The idea

When you define the two words, say how they relate. A hadith is the report. The Sunnah is the practice the report points to. Treating them as one word loses a mark the question set aside for the difference. A report has parts the syllabus names. Isnad is the chain of narrators. Matn is the text, the words of the report. Rawi is a narrator. You do not need a long chain from memory. You need to know which word is which.

Scholars judge a report. Sahih means sound. Hasan means good. Daif means weak. The six collections students meet are linked with Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasai and Ibn Majah. Learn the set hadith in your school file well enough to give the meaning and the lesson. Glearn does not publish that list. A number you are not sure of should stay out, just as a verse number should. Do not invent a wording and call it a hadith from one of the six.

The Islamic Studies tips guide sets out the papers, how to answer a theme, and the mistakes that cost marks. WASSCE Islamic Studies tips

What earns the marks

Hadith and Sunnah must be separated if the question asks for both. Isnad is the chain, not the text. Matn is the text, not the narrator. Sahih is not Daif. Naming a collector without the judgement the question asked is a different point. Do not write out a hadith you cannot translate.

Practice questions

These are practice questions in the style of the paper, with a model answer and a mark scheme. They are not a promise of what your paper will ask.

Questions about Hadith and the Sunnah

Are hadith and Sunnah the same word?+

No. A hadith is a report of what the Prophet said or did. The Sunnah is his practice. Say both meanings when the question asks for the difference.

Which hadith should I memorise?+

The set in your school file, well enough to give the meaning and the lesson. Glearn does not publish that list. A wording or a number you cannot defend should stay off the page. All WASSCE Islamic Studies past questions
