BECE Religious and Moral Education: Religious festivals

A festival remembers an event or thanks God for a harvest. It also gathers a community.

The idea

Christian festivals on the syllabus include Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, and Easter, which celebrates the resurrection. Muslim festivals include Eid al Fitr, which marks the end of the Ramadan fast, and Eid al Adha, the festival of sacrifice, which remembers the willingness of Ibrahim to obey God. Traditional festivals are tied to a people and a story. Homowo, among the Ga, celebrates a harvest and mocks hunger. Aboakyer, among the Effutu of Winneba, is the deer hunting festival. Hogbetsotso, among the Anlo Ewe, remembers the journey from Notsie.

Festivals do religious work and social work. People worship, remember, and settle quarrels. Families travel home. The young learn the story of the group. When you describe a festival, give the people, the event it marks, and one custom a visitor would actually see. A list of names with no story earns the name marks only.

What earns the marks

Match the festival to the right people. Homowo is Ga, not Asante. Hogbetsotso is Anlo. Aboakyer is Effutu, at Winneba. Eid al Fitr follows Ramadan. Eid al Adha is the sacrifice, not the end of the fast. Do not swap them. Christmas is the birth of Jesus. Easter is the resurrection, not the birth.
