BECE exam tips

How to use the week before the BECE, what to check on the morning, and how to handle objective questions and written answers. GLearn does not set the exam.

These are techniques for the paper, not a promise of a grade. WAEC sets the BECE for junior high students in Ghana. Glearn Technologies writes this guide. GLearn does not publish the hall rules, does not know your centre, and does not quote a chief examiner. If a line here and the official notice disagree, follow the notice on the WAEC Ghana site.

The week before

Open the official timetable and see which of your papers come first. English Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies are on every BECE. A subject you are not entered for is not your paper. Give the soonest paper the largest share of the week, and keep a shorter pass over the papers that come later.

Review work you have already done. The day before a paper, do not open a topic you have never studied. One timed objective set and one written answer, with a clock, are enough to remind you how the sitting feels.

Confirm three things while you still have a quiet evening: your centre, your index number, and what that paper allows you to bring. The centre and the index number are on the admission notice or photo card from your school. GLearn does not issue either one.

Exam morning checklist

Be at the centre before the start time on the official timetable. Your school, or the admission notice, tells you where that centre is. GLearn does not tell you to arrive a fixed number of minutes early. The WAEC notice for your sitting is the rule.

The invigilator reads the rules in the hall. Follow those. If this page and the invigilator disagree, follow the invigilator. Standing rules for the examination live on the WAEC Ghana site.

  • Index number, copied from the admission notice or photo card, and written where the paper tells you to write it.
  • A pen for written work, and a pencil if the sheet asks you to shade.
  • A ruler, mathematical instruments, or a calculator only when the instructions for that paper allow them.
  • The centre and the start time, read before you leave home.
  • Notes and textbooks left outside. Do not plan to use a phone inside the hall.

Time on the paper

Read the front of the question paper before you write. It tells you how long you have, how many questions to answer, and which questions are compulsory. If the length on the question paper is not the length on the timetable, follow the question paper.

The BECE timetable guide records what the latest WAEC file says about sittings. Read that file for your year. If it says both papers for a subject are one sitting, with no break, do not plan a break unless the invigilator gives one.

Split the time so you can attempt every question you are asked to answer. A question you never reach cannot earn a mark. If one question stalls you, mark it, move on, and come back if time remains. Leave a few minutes at the end to check that every answer sits against the right number.

Objective questions and written answers

An objective item is a multiple choice item with one best answer. Read the whole stem, including words such as not, except and most. Then read every option. Remove the options that cannot be right, and choose the best of what remains. Shade or tick the sheet the way the instructions say, and keep the number on the sheet matched to the number on the question paper.

Answer every objective item you are asked to answer. A blank line earns nothing. This page does not invent a rule about marks being removed for a wrong choice. Read the instructions on your own paper.

A written or essay answer is marked point by point. Answer the question that was set, including every part. If the rubric says answer a set number, and one question is compulsory, do that. Extra answers use time the required ones needed. Show the working in a calculation. A right final number with no steps can miss the marks that sit on those steps. Label a diagram the question asks for. Do not copy the question out and call it an answer.

On GLearn, Kevin marks a written BECE answer and shows the point that earned a mark and the point that was missing. Anna is the coach on WASSCE practice. The first questions need no account.

How to read a question and answer it

Notice the command. State, explain, calculate, list and compare do not ask for the same thing. A list does not need a long essay. An explanation needs the reason, not only the name. A calculation needs the steps, not only the final number.

Notice how many points the question asks for. If it asks for three reasons, three complete reasons are the task. One more reason does not repair a missing one.

For a written question, spend a short moment listing the points you will make, then write them in order. That plan is shorter than rewriting a paragraph that answered the wrong demand.

What chief examiners keep returning to

WAEC chief examiners write a report after a sitting. Across subjects, those reports return to the same habits. This page describes the habits in general. It does not quote a report, and it does not invent a pass rate or a percentage.

Candidates answer a different question from the one on the paper, often a memorised essay that never meets the demand. They miss the rubric: too many questions, or a compulsory question left out. They lose marks on expression, spelling and punctuation where the paper marks those. In a calculation they skip the working or the unit. A diagram arrives with no labels, or it does not match the question.

None of that is a secret of one year. You can practise the opposite. Read the command, obey the rubric, write the point the mark is for, and show the step.

How to pass the BECE

Staying calm

A blank moment is common. Read the question once more. Write the part you can do. Leave the rest for a second pass. One hard item is not the whole paper, and one hard paper is not the whole BECE.

Sleep, food and water the night before do more than a new topic at midnight. If you feel rushed, go back to the clock and the next question you can finish, rather than staring at the one that stopped you.

After the paper

If another paper is the same day, do not spend the gap reliving every answer. Use it to be ready for the next paper: a drink if you can take one, and a check of the start time you already wrote down.

After the last paper, the result is a separate step. WAEC releases it. CSSPS places candidates into senior high school. GLearn does not check a result and does not change a placement.

If a topic felt weak and you still have a paper that uses it, review that topic from work you have already done. A new topic, started in a panic, is a poor use of the night.

BECE exam technique questions

What should I bring to the BECE?+

Your index number, on the admission notice or photo card, and only the materials that paper allows. A pen for written work, a pencil if you must shade, and instruments or a calculator only when the paper allows them. Read the rules on the WAEC Ghana site and follow the invigilator. GLearn does not publish a kit list.

How do I manage time in the BECE?+

Read the front of the question paper for the length and for how many questions to answer. If that length and the timetable disagree, follow the question paper. Attempt every question you are asked to answer. If one stalls you, mark it and move on. Read the timetable file for your year before you plan a break.

What is the difference between objective questions and written answers?+

An objective item asks for one best option. Read every option, then mark the sheet against the right number. A written answer is marked point by point. Answer each part, obey the rubric, and show working where the question asks you to calculate. Kevin marks written answers on GLearn.

What mistakes do chief examiners highlight?+

Reports often describe candidates who answer a different question, ignore the rubric, skip working or units, or hand in a diagram with no labels. Expression and spelling also cost marks where the paper marks them. This page does not quote a report and does not give a figure.

Where are the official BECE rules?+

On the WAEC Ghana site, and in the instructions the invigilator reads. GLearn is exam prep from Glearn Technologies. It does not set the BECE.
