ObjectiveQ1 of 10

Which of the following is an element of design, not a principle?

Elements and principles of design

Answer: B. Colour

Colour is an element: it is a part you can see in the work. Balance, emphasis and rhythm are principles. They describe how the parts are arranged. A principle is not a thing on the page in the way a patch of colour is.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

A poster uses a large yellow title on a dark ground so that the title is noticed first. Which principle is this?

Elements and principles of design

Answer: B. Emphasis

Emphasis is the part the eye reaches first. Size and a strong colour against a dark ground both push the title forward. Texture is an element, not the principle at work here. Proportion would compare the sizes, but the point of the question is what the contrast is for.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

Which pair of colours mixes to make orange?

Drawing and painting

Answer: B. Red and yellow

Red and yellow are primary colours, and together they make orange, a secondary colour. Blue and yellow make green. Blue and red make violet. White does not create orange. It only lightens a colour that is already there.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

A fruit is lit from the left. Where should the cast shadow on the table be drawn?

Drawing and painting

Answer: B. On the right of the fruit

A cast shadow falls on the surface the object stands on, away from the light. Light from the left throws the shadow to the right. The side of the fruit that faces the light is lighter. The far side is darker. That shading is separate from the shadow on the table.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

In music, what is tempo?

Music and rhythm

Answer: C. The speed of the beat

Tempo is how fast or slow the beat is. The pattern of long and short sounds is the rhythm. Highness or lowness is the pitch. The words are the lyrics. A slow tempo can carry a busy rhythm, so the three words are not substitutes for each other.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

Which instrument is a bamboo flute used in Ghana?

Music and rhythm

Answer: B. Atenteben

The atenteben is a bamboo flute. The player blows it and changes the pitch by covering holes. The fontomfrom and the donno are drums. The gankogui is a double bell, often used to keep time. A flute is a melodic instrument. A drum in this list is not.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

What is mime?

Drama and performance

Answer: B. Acting with gesture and without spoken words

Mime tells the action with the body and does not use spoken words. The gesture has to be clear because there is no sentence to explain the object. Dialogue is the spoken alternative. A painted background is scenery. A song is music, not mime.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

In weaving, which thread crosses the warp to build the cloth?

Crafts and textiles

Answer: A. The weft

The warp runs the length of the cloth and is set up first, under tension. The weft crosses over and under the warp and is packed down to make the cloth. The loom holds the warp. Dye is a later or different process. A needle may sew finished strips together, as in kente, but it is not the weft.
