BECE Ghanaian Language past questions and answers

Eight multiple choice and two written, marked as you go. Free, no account.

ObjectiveQ1 of 10

A comprehension answer on this paper should mainly do which of the following?

Comprehension

Answer: B. Use a fact from the passage to answer the question that was asked

The mark follows the passage. The answer takes the fact the question named and says it in the language of the entry. Copying the whole paragraph never shows which fact was asked for. A similar story from memory, or an opinion the passage does not contain, answers a different text.

ObjectiveQ2 of 10

Why does an answer in English miss the mark on a Ghanaian Language comprehension?

Comprehension

Answer: B. The paper is testing the language of the entry

The essay and the comprehension are in the language on the entry. English belongs in a translation task, on the side the question names. A right idea in the wrong language does not show the sentence the marker can credit. The marker can read the answer. The answer is in the wrong language for this part.

ObjectiveQ3 of 10

In the published scheme, how many composition questions do you answer?

Composition

Answer: B. One, then the compulsory parts

The scheme says you answer one composition. Comprehension, translation, and language and usage are still compulsory. A second composition does not repair a blank translation. If the question paper in the hall asks for a different number, follow the question paper. This page describes the scheme. It does not replace that file.

ObjectiveQ4 of 10

Which set is a finished letter in the language of the entry?

Composition

Answer: A. A greeting, the message the task asked for, and a close

A letter needs a greeting, the message that answers the task, and a close. The whole letter is in the language of the entry. A list of greetings never says why you wrote. A message in English does not show that language. A close with nothing before it is not a letter.

ObjectiveQ5 of 10

A translation on this paper is marked mainly for which of the following?

Grammar

Answer: B. Keeping the meaning, including who acted and any time or place

Translation moves a sentence between English and the language of the entry. Keep who did the action, and keep a time or a place that was already there. A longer sentence is not a better one. A reason the original never gave, or a change of person, is a different meaning, so it loses the mark.

ObjectiveQ6 of 10

Which statement about the language of the entry is correct?

Grammar

Answer: C. Asante Twi and Akuapem Twi are separate entries

You sit the language on your entry. Asante Twi and Akuapem Twi are separate. Fante is not Twi. Ga is not Dangme. Mixing two varieties in one answer shows a different language from the one being tested. The question paper, not a guess, is the variety that counts.

ObjectiveQ7 of 10

A full proverb answer includes which pair?

Literature

Answer: A. The saying, and the meaning in a situation

The saying is the memory. The meaning, in the situation the question gave, shows you know when the proverb fits. The saying alone is half an answer when both were asked. A situation with no saying has not named the proverb. A story title is a different task.

ObjectiveQ8 of 10

Why must a custom answer name the people?

Culture

Answer: B. The custom belongs to a people, and communities differ

Ghanaian Language and Culture asks which people the custom belongs to. A greeting, a rite or a festival is not the same everywhere. Naming the people shows which custom you mean. If you are not sure, leave it out rather than guess. A place name that is not those people does not earn the point.

TheoryQ9 of 103 marks

(a) State two things a comprehension answer must do. (2 marks)(b) Give one reason a copied paragraph can still score nothing. (1 mark)
