WASSCE Management in Living: The family

A family is a group of people related by blood, marriage or adoption who share a home and care for one another. The type of family changes who lives there and who does the work.

The idea

A nuclear family is parents and their children living together. An extended family includes other relatives, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, often in the same compound or in close support. A single parent family is still a family: one parent raises the children. Do not treat one type as the only correct home. The paper wants the name, who belongs in it, and one advantage or one limit. An extended family can share childcare and money. It can also crowd a house and make decisions slower. A nuclear family can decide quickly. It has fewer adults to call on when someone is ill.

The family has work to do. It feeds and shelters its members, teaches children how to live with other people, and gives affection and a sense of belonging. Roles are the parts people play: a parent provides and guides, a child learns and helps at a level that fits their age. Roles can be shared. The family life cycle is the stages a family passes through, from a couple starting out, to the arrival of children, to children leaving home, to later life. Name the stage before you list the needs. A family with a baby needs different time and money from a family whose children have left. Conflict is normal. What earns the mark is a way of handling it: listen, state the problem, agree a next step, and ask a trusted adult or a counsellor when the family cannot settle it.

What earns the marks

Name the family type and who is in it. "A happy home" is not a type. A function needs a verb: feed, shelter, teach, protect. The life cycle is stages, not a list of furniture. Do not swap nuclear and extended. If the question says explain, give the feature and why it matters to the people in that home. One example of conflict resolution is enough. A sermon is not an answer.

Practice questions

These are practice questions in the style of the paper, with a model answer and a mark scheme. They are not a promise of what your paper will ask.

1Question 1

5 marks

(a) Distinguish between a nuclear family and an extended family. (4 marks)

(b) State one function of the family. (1 mark)

Model answer

(a) A nuclear family is parents and their children living together. An extended family also includes other relatives, such as grandparents or aunts, who share the home or support it closely.

(b) The family feeds and shelters its members. Teaching children and giving affection are other true functions.

Mark scheme

  • Nuclear: parents and their children2 marks
  • Extended: other relatives included in the household or in close support2 marks
  • One function, such as feeding, shelter, teaching or affection1 mark

2Question 2

2 marks

State two needs that change when a family moves from the stage with young children to the stage when those children leave home. (2 marks)

Model answer

Less daily childcare is needed, and the money once spent on school fees and daily meals for children can be planned differently. The house may feel larger than the people who remain.

Mark scheme

  • One change, such as less childcare, a different budget, or a quieter house1 mark
  • A second change, different from the first1 mark

3Question 3

3 marks

Explain one way a family can handle a disagreement without making it worse. (3 marks)

Model answer

The people involved listen to each other, state the problem in plain words, and agree one next step. If they cannot settle it, a trusted adult or a counsellor can help. Shouting over each other is not that method.

Mark scheme

  • A method, such as listening, naming the problem, or agreeing a step1 mark
  • How that method stops the quarrel growing1 mark
  • A limit, such as asking for help when the family cannot settle it1 mark

Questions about The family

Is a single parent household a family?+

Yes. A family is people related by blood, marriage or adoption who share care. One parent and the children are a family. Name that form if the question asks for it, and do not treat it as a failed nuclear family.
